selling pictures of someone else's truck
Posted On 11/17/2008 05:12:33 PM by mudboggshirts

I just saw a poll on mudspace asking if someone would be mad if a pic was taken of their truck and then sold to the public...I grew up around racecars and dragboats..I hung out at the local race tracks for about 15 years...local track photographers always took pictures of ALL the cars at the tracks and then sold them to the public...no money went to the drivers....also I have a relative that sells the National Speedway Directory...he does not give money to the tracks...it is actually a way to help promote the drivers, tracks and sponsers..It is good advertising!

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1581152256/   In doing our television show, this question has come up a few times.  I would encourage reading this book. The laws of photography, video or still can be quite "grey".   I am not implying or trying to tell anyone what they should or shouldn't do.  We film races as a whole or "Public Events" usually at the request of the "Property/Track owner"  But, we are VERY careful about images etc. that we use on "For Sale/Profit" Merchandise.  The book listed in the link above will tell you why...As I am not a lawyer.  LOL

i am a track photographer. i dont generally make anymoney on pictures i give them away low res for web use high res i will sell. but i have only sold one high res. people just dont buy pictures anymore. everyone has a camera no one cares about quality prints. i do a print that comes framed 13 x 19 that is off the wall quality better than anything you can get anywhere guranteed too last 200 years. it sells for 150.00 and at that price i make 25.00 so how much should the driver get? sure he drove the truck but i stood in front of him risking my life too get the picture. so seriously how much should the truck owner get? please be kind too the photographers we are starving out here!

I am a photographer and I agree if we are making money off someone else we should at least give them something.........you know that "PAY IT FORWARD" thing.

It's just good karma!!!

I learned the hard way when I was younger (2o) years ago...I did everything for free..I loved doing peoples personal vehicles on shirts for them..Then I worked in a furniture factory for 12 years and quit not knowing what to do with my life...Now I drew someone's Harley's fro him as a Christmas present....He offered me $650 dollars a piece...I had never charged a thing ever ...He told me to pull my head out of my butt! I could have been doing what I loved to do for a living instead of Westinghouse being miserable!   All I can say is follow your dreams..I am also a starving artist but I love what I do and I'm sharing it with the public....
